Canada Day in Osbourne Village

July 1st was Canada day and I made my way down to Osbourne Village to celebrate a little with a few friends. Ended up being a really good time, the weather was perfect, and we were able to find a table for a little flip cup which I completely bombed at.

Bad news is, on the way to Osbourne my cars front right drive shaft bar thing 90% ripped off when I had to break to avoid some guy that swung out of his parking spot. So the car that I've been ripping around in for the last 8-10 years is done! Melissa and I will be needing to go grab something new this week hopefully.

Anyway! Here's a few of the photos from Canada Day!

A Little Behind

Getting slightly behind on the blog as I have been doing a ton of changing to the rest of the site. I am starting to get the hang of all the little way that I can work with the Squarespace platform and get the look that I am going for, just take a little trial and error!

I've been out on a few engagement shoot with Corey Jonasson from COJO photo and have been learning quite a bit with how we works with his couples. I decided that I needed to get some of my own shoots going a little while back so I can take my own people out and get my own portfolio with my style up on the website. I've set up a few in the next couple weeks with my friends and their significant others and I am super excited to go and start to get my own shoots up on the portfolio and blog.

Unfortunately I don't have a photo or two to throw up here, however, something that inspired me over the last week was this video of Joey L's recent expedition to Syria. Seriously a must watch for any human... not even photographer.

The Forks Market Engagement Photoshoot

I reached out to a few wedding photographers in Winnipeg last summer to see if they would be willing to let me come along for some of their engagement and wedding shoots to learn and get some experience.

I had not a single response except for Corey Jonasson from COJO Photo, and I'm super thankful that he has allowed me to come along and learn the ropes shooting engagements and weddings. Not too many photographers want to share their knowledge locally with other aspiring photographers, and he and his wife Amanda (second half of COJO Photo) have been open books, and I really appreciate it.

I tagged along with Corey last night for an engagement shoot that he had with his clients Nerissa & Paul at the Forks. They we're tons of fun, super easy going and even willing to do some light hiking down a river bank. Learning how to pose people is the main thing I learn from shooting with Corey as it is something I've never done, and shoot almost exclusively candids and with a documentary feel. One thing that I've learned as far as how to shoot as a second shooter during an engagement session is to try to shoot during moments when the couples eyes are closed, or when they are looking away from the main shooters camera, shooting a posed subject from a different angle when they are not looking at your lens is unappealing. In the next few days I'll make a top 5 list of dos and don'ts for second shooters looking to do the same thing I'm doing shooting with COJO Photo. In the meantime, here are a few of my shots from last night!

Winnipeg Jazz Fest 2015

Went down to the Exchange for the Winnipeg Jazz Festival opening weekend and contacted a friend of mine that was playing. He was able to get me some extra access to shoot back stage and what limited space they had beside the stage.

This was my first time out really shooting something at night with awkward lighting with the A7ii. I had heard that it didn't do very well in low light, so, I was nervous to see how it would go. I only have my 35mm 2.8 Zeiss Sonnar for a lens, so I had to make the work for the night. It was a good way to jump right into shooting with a lot of perimeters cause it really makes you think about how and where your shooting from.

I thought the A7ii did a great job handling the low and changing light scenario. I had no problem bumping up the ISO and the photos came out fairly well for a first go at it. There are definitely a few things looking back that I would have done differently, but, that will just have to wait till next time.

Here are a few of the ones I liked, the Vikings killed it, not so sure I did, let me know!
