All of these last posts, I think most of what I've been talking about has been that those shots were 90% prep, planning, & willingness to get to specific places to make the concept you have in mind a reality.
This photo is kind of the opposite. I had been using a lot of reflection shots downtown (probably over using), but I knew I wanted to try to do that same kind of thing with nature. Granted, easy as hell if you're in the mountains, or in the country where there are lakes, streams, ect. and everything is naturally picturesque. But I wanted to do something "nature like" in the city, & use it as a way to show how naturally beautiful Winnipeg can be.
I drive around a truck at work that is higher up than my normal vehicle, & when going down some of the side streets when the snow began to melt, I noticed how crazy the trees looked in the reflection of the bigger puddles. I thought that if I could find a street with canopied trees, and some water, the frame would probably look like a natural tunnel. After work I went to the only area of the city I know for sure has an abundance of these kind of canopies, in River Heights. Originally my idea was A) Find canopies B) Street running East/West so I could include a colourful sunset/sunrise and C) Find A+B with a big puddle and no cars.
I drove up & down streets all over River Heights for a good hour or two & found a couple that I thought could potentially work if we were to have a good sky that evening, but, it was cloudy, and I figured I'd just keep it in mind for another time. I went home, hung out a bit, was basically ready to go watch some TV & crash. Then @melissanel looked out the window and said, "Whoa, check out the fog". I took a quick glance & was out the door, I only had maybe a half hour before it got too dark. I no longer needed the sunrise or sunset cause I had the fog, so I just needed a big puddle and hopefully no parked cars. I knew exactly where to go, and grabbed a dozen shots before it started to get too dark.
Moral of the story... talked a lot about methodically planning out, & willing to be where/when other people aren't. This was an example of being willing to drop everything & go.
